Journal Entry #3: 3/6 Fort Worth Nature Center

  Journal Entry #3

3/6 Trip to Fort Worth Nature Center

Today's habitat restoration work, focusing on cutting privet, was quite similar to last week's task. However, I felt much more productive this time. It seemed like everyone had a better sense of what to expect and how to approach the task. For me, the progress we made far exceeded what we accomplished last week, and I felt more confident in my efforts. One reason this week felt easier was that I had already developed a strategy for tackling the privet and knew the most effective way to reach the base of each bush. Below are some photos that capture highlights from the day:

One of the photos I took was of a privet bush before we cut it down. It shows just how tangled the bushes can get, which adds a level of challenge—and excitement—to the task of removing them. In the end, we successfully cleared this area of privet.

This time, I also made an effort to take in more of the surroundings beyond just the privet. I realized that last week, I was so focused on identifying and removing privet that I overlooked the other aspects of the land. Today, I made sure to observe the entire environment and even captured a picture of some cacti I noticed!

Another photo I took shows an area where our class worked together to clear privet. I was really impressed by the size of the pile we accumulated—it felt like a significant achievement!

Extra photo: Kate with her cutting tool.

All in all, it was another productive day, and I’m looking forward to more experiences like this in the future.
